Video: Michael Stipe Looks Back at 30 Years Of R.E.M.

R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe on “CBS This Morning.”

Among other things he says it’s unlikely that R.E.M. will ever reunite. “That will never happen,” he says.

I bet they do.

And he talks about how shy he was when the band first got famous and it sounds like he’ll do a solo album at some point.

“I think I’ll sing again,” he says. “Not soon.”

[I just published my rock ‘n’ roll novel, True Love Scars.” Rolling Stone has a great review of my book in a recent issue. Read it here. There’s info about True Love Scars here.]

Last night three-quarters of R.E.M. reunited at Athens, GA’s 400 Watt Club and played a groovy version of “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville” from 1984′s Reckoning.

Mike Mills and Bill Berry joined Peter Buck, who was there to perform with Kevin Kinney of Drivin’ N Cryin’. Michael Stipe was in the audience, according to a Twitter post by a fan who was there, but Stipe failed to take the stage.

Michael Stipe Sings “Pale Blue Eyes” In Laura Levine Film

This is quite beautiful. The photographer Laura Levine shot Super-8 footage for a still unreleased film, “Just Like A Movie,” in 1983. Here’s Michael Stipe singing “Pale Blue Eyes.”

On R.E.M.’s remhq website, Laura Levine writes:

“it’s an excerpt from the original unreleased Super-8 film “Just Like a Movie.” With the sad news about Lou Reed’s passing last week, it seemed the right time to share this particular scene, of Michael singing “Pale Blue Eyes” by the railroad tracks. (The song itself was recorded earlier that day on a Walkman, with Matthew Sweet on guitar). Jeremy Ayers makes a magical appearance as Puddlefoot.”

Thanks remhq!
